Real Madrid Somehow Cling On to Beat Inter on José Mourinho’s Big Champions League Night

Real Madrid 2–1 Inter Milan: Mbappé and Valverde strike early before Courtois produces another heroic performance to secure a dramatic victory at the Bernabéu.

September 8, 2026 — Madrid

Real Madrid survived one of the most chaotic and unpredictable nights of their Champions League campaign as they edged Inter Milan 2–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

On a night filled with mistakes, spectacular saves, missed opportunities and relentless attacking football, Madrid somehow managed to protect an early two-goal advantage despite Inter dominating large portions of the contest.

Kylian Mbappé and Federico Valverde put the Spanish giants in control during the opening 23 minutes, but Inter refused to disappear. Carlos Augusto eventually pulled one goal back in the second half, setting up a tense final period in which Real Madrid were repeatedly forced onto the defensive.

At the heart of Madrid's survival was goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who produced a series of outstanding saves and once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most important players in the squad.

A Chaotic Start at the Bernabéu

Inter appeared to settle more comfortably during the opening stages. The Italian side enjoyed significant possession and created several early opportunities, with Madrid struggling to establish control in midfield.

Courtois was quickly called into action and made an important early intervention to deny Marcus Thuram.

Then, against the run of play, Real Madrid suddenly found the breakthrough.

Inter's defensive error presented Brahim Díaz with an opportunity to release Mbappé, and the French forward made no mistake. His composed finish gave Madrid the lead despite the visitors having looked more comfortable for much of the opening period.

The goal changed the atmosphere inside the Bernabéu and gave Madrid the confidence to attack the spaces left behind by Inter.

Valverde Doubles Madrid's Advantage

Real Madrid then produced another moment of opportunistic attacking football.

Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez attempted to deal with pressure inside his own penalty area, but Federico Valverde capitalized on the situation and finished to make it 2–0.

Just 23 minutes had been played.

Madrid had scored with remarkably little possession and relatively few opportunities, while Inter had already created considerably more attacking pressure.

The scoreline therefore did not necessarily reflect the balance of play.

That contrast became one of the defining stories of the match.

Inter Refuse to Give Up

Two goals behind did not stop Inter from continuing to attack.

The Italian side repeatedly found openings around Madrid's midfield and created several opportunities before half-time. Inter eventually finished the first half with a significant advantage in possession and shots.

Madrid, meanwhile, relied heavily on quick transitions and the individual quality of players such as Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham.

Inter even hit the crossbar, while Madrid survived several dangerous moments that could easily have changed the entire complexion of the match.

The statistics highlighted just how unusual the game was: Inter enjoyed around 70% possession in the first half and produced far more shots, yet Madrid went into the interval two goals ahead.

Courtois Becomes Madrid's Hero

The second half became increasingly frantic.

Inter continued pushing forward while Madrid searched for the counterattack that could have ended the contest.

Instead, Courtois repeatedly stood between Inter and an equalizer.

The Belgian goalkeeper made crucial saves from several Inter attacks, while Josep Martínez also prevented Madrid from extending their lead.

The match effectively became a battle between the two goalkeepers.

Madrid had opportunities to make it 3–0, but Inter also had enough chances to completely change the result.

With every passing minute, the pressure on the home side increased.

Carlos Augusto Gives Inter Hope

Inter eventually found the breakthrough in the 77th minute.

Lautaro Martínez helped create the opportunity before Carlos Augusto finished from close range to reduce the deficit to 2–1.

Suddenly, the final 15 minutes became a completely different game.

Inter had momentum.

Madrid had the lead.

And the Bernabéu was waiting nervously for the final whistle.

The visitors pushed forward looking for an equalizer, while Madrid attempted to survive the pressure and exploit spaces on the counterattack.

The 89th-Minute Save That Changed Everything

The decisive moment arrived late in the match.

With Inter searching desperately for 2–2, Courtois produced another spectacular save to deny Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 89th minute.

It was arguably the save that secured the three points for Madrid.

Without Courtois' performance, the outcome could have been completely different.

Madrid had struggled to control the game for long periods, but their goalkeeper repeatedly rescued them when the defensive structure broke down.

Mourinho's Emotional Return to the Champions League Spotlight

The victory carried an additional layer of significance because of José Mourinho's connection with both clubs.

Mourinho previously managed Inter and famously guided the Italian club to Champions League glory. His return to face his former team therefore created one of the night's biggest storylines.

Now back on the Real Madrid touchline, Mourinho experienced a match that perfectly reflected the dramatic nature of his managerial career: tactical uncertainty, defensive resilience, counterattacking moments and enormous pressure.

After the final whistle, Mourinho described the match as "mad" and acknowledged how difficult it had been for Madrid to control the contest. He also highlighted Courtois' importance to the victory.

Real Madrid Still Have Plenty to Improve

Despite the victory, this was far from a perfect Real Madrid performance.

The home side struggled to control midfield and frequently allowed Inter to progress into dangerous areas.

Their inability to maintain possession became increasingly obvious as the match progressed.

However, Champions League football is often about finding a way to win even when the performance is not perfect.

Madrid did exactly that.

They scored two goals early, survived enormous pressure and relied on their goalkeeper when the situation became desperate.

A Victory Built on Survival

The final statistics told an unusual story.

Inter created enough opportunities to feel unfortunate to leave Madrid without a point, while Real Madrid will be delighted that their efficiency in front of goal and Courtois' brilliance were enough to secure victory.

The match produced 37 shots, with both goalkeepers making numerous important saves.

For Real Madrid, however, the most important number was the one on the scoreboard.

2–1.

Three points.

A Champions League victory.

And another dramatic European night at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Final Verdict

Real Madrid may not have produced their most convincing performance, but they demonstrated one of the qualities that has defined the club throughout its European history: the ability to survive when the game appears to be slipping away.

Mbappé provided the opening spark, Valverde doubled the advantage, and Courtois ultimately kept Inter from completing the comeback.

For Mourinho, it was a memorable return to the Champions League spotlight against a club that holds a special place in his career.

For Real Madrid, it was simply a night of survival.

Inter may have controlled much of the match, but Real Madrid controlled the one thing that mattered most — the final score
